Introduction to Gmail and Creating a New Gmail Account
Gmail is an email service provided by Google and supports free advertising. Google allows users to access Gmail through secure webmail and POP3 or IMAP4 protocols. Gmail was initially started as an invite-only beta release on 1st April, 2004. Gmail became available to the general public in 2007. In July 2009, Gmail was officially upgraded from beta status, along with Google Apps suite. With Gmail, users can exchange files containing images, text, video and audio. The maximum size per email supported by Gmail is 25MB including the attachments.
Features and User Interface
Gmail offers a search-oriented user interface and a conversation view which is similar to most internet forums. Gmail runs on Google GFE/2.0 on Linux and is known for its use of Ajax. By June 2012, Gmail became the most widely used web-based email provider and has over 425 million active users worldwide. In May 2014, Gmail became the first android app to hit one billion installations. Gmail also supports multiple accounts, where users can access their business and personal Gmail accounts at the same time.
In the early days, Gmail.com used to offer 1GB of free storage capacity per user. While most competitors like Hotmail were offering 2MB to 4MB of storage. On the first anniversary of Gmail, the limit was increased to 2GB and in May 2013, the combined storage limit of Gmail, Google Drive and Google+ was increased to 15GB for free users. Gmail also offers additional storage through monthly subscription plans of up to 30TB storage capacity.
In 2013 Gmail.com introduced tabbed Inbox, where user’s emails are categorized in different tabs and once the user signs into their Gmail account they see five tabs. Gmail is available freely on different mobile platforms in more than 40 languages. Gmail also features a search bar for searching emails, which can also be used to search contacts. Google has also developed several applications to enhance the capabilities of Gmail including Gmail Notifier and Gmail Offline. Gmail also features Group Chat and Voice Calls and allows Video calls though Hangout. Gmail users can mark their important conversations and view attachments instantly.
Gmail Login and Gmail Sign In
First step to create a new Gmail account is to open the Gmail website by going to www.gmail.com. Then click on Create an account and you will be redirected to a new page. Wait for the form to load completely, then complete all the fields and choose a Gmail ID and password. Then click Next Step on the next four pages and that’s it, you now have a new Gmail Account.
New users can sign-in their new Gmail account by going to www.Gmail.com and entering their Gmail ID and password.
